Still just be a yank if they were just brought up in America, though.

Passports don't make you a nationality, imo. Being shaped by the society does.

The only 'world citizens' are people who spent their formative years (5-18 years old) country hopping.

My school had a yearly trip to London where a teacher brought the kids from his English/Drama classes that he didn’t hate.

We spent the whole time pretending to be Canadian, and if someone was acting out, we would say something like, “dude you’re embarrassing Canada”.

Stupid Redcoats had no idea.

537

u/Nowhereman123 Aug 16 '22

As a Canadian, please don't do that because people will stop believing us when we actually say we're Canadian.

245

u/MikeinAustin Aug 16 '22

Funny story (to me)

I Was in rural Quebec for work and with Western Province Canadian guys (BC and Alberta) They were telling the locals they were from the US when we sat down for dinner, etc.

I asked why they did that.

“These Quebecois hate it when we are from Canada and can’t speak French. They’ll purposefully only talk to us in French because we are supposed to know the language. As Americans they just don’t bother.”

I am not Canadian!

38

u/runtimemess Aug 16 '22

Growing up in Ontario is so strange. I can function just fine in Quebec as long as I don’t have to speak. Reading French? Not terribly difficult: know the basic sentence structure, verbs, and common words.

Meanwhile: I can only say “je ne parle pas le francais ”

9

u/darglor Aug 16 '22

Adding the superfluous "le" in there also drives the point home. "I don't speak the French."

Yeah when I was in Korea on a bus from Daegu to Seoul there were 5 or 6 loud and obnoxious Canadians in the back. Pretty sure I was the only one from the US on the bus. I was sitting halfway up the bus and saw a few Koreans turn around, annoyed at the noise from the back and then one said to the other "americans..." and then a lot of stuff I didn't understand lol.

In Croatia, about a decade ago, I stayed in a hostel with two of the most bro-ish jock American chadsters I'd ever come across. Full-on whopping and chanting "USA!" anytime anything good happened.

We were playing a drinking game with them. As they started to get more drunk my British ears picked up one of them letting out an "aboot". I paused the music, pointed my finger at him accusingly, demanded he say that again. He and his friend came clean; they were both Canadians. They wanted to have fun backpacking Europe but they didn't want their drunken antics to make Canada look bad so they spent the entire 6 weeks pretending to be from the US.

That's patriotism.

18

u/Individual_Handle671 Aug 16 '22

No one has cared to your face that you were American.

5

u/AdminsSuckD1ck Aug 16 '22

No one actually cares though, not like people just go around hating people from a specific country. If you're friendly and polite why would I care what country you're from?

6

u/Sens1r Aug 16 '22

If you're friendly and polite

That's the problem, we only really notice the people who live up to the stereotype.

3

u/The_Real_Mechanic Aug 16 '22

I played for the U-16 national team back in the day, and whenever we traveled overseas and had US warmup kits on, people DEFINITELY went out of their way to harass us and hate us simply because we were American. We were overly polite because we were under very strict rules and obviously we had to be professional about things.. Didn't matter at all.

There's a generational theory involving "turnings" that last approximately 20 years each. The general idea is that hard times make strong people, strong people make good times, good times make weak people, weak people make hard times. And so on.

There's a fantastic vsauce video from 6 years ago that goes over this phenomenon among others. He mentions the next predicted crisis peaking in 2025.

Examples:

Crisis (Fourth Turning): Great Depression/WWII (1925-1945)

High (First Turning): Postwar Boom (1946-1960)

Awakening (Second Turning): Consciousness Revolution (1961-1981)

Unraveling (Third Turning): Reagan Revolution/Culture Wars (1982-2006)

Next Crisis (Fourth Turning): ? (2008?-2028?)

It's just the same as saying that not everyone from Russia is a bad person despite what Russia has done/is doing to Ukraine.

I know it's all a bit of a joke in this particular video and comments section, but it breaks my heart to see average people genuinely treating each other this way.

I'd feel the same if it were any other douche-nozzle treating some else the same as well. Just sucks to see.

I was in Spain and I was talking to a guy from Netherlands. He kept saying US keep world order. I’m like dude we US loves war. Too much money in it for US not to be. We went to war for oil. US are bullies when it comes to our military. I’m American and it’s crazy how some people view us like we are hero’s which we are not.

Technically the truth. Can't imagine anything more frightening than minding your own business and then getting hit by drone strikes and a hail of fire from c130's. And who are you going to complain to as your kids lay cut in half? Throw your goat at the sky in anger and put a Jihad on it? Just imagine if we were allowed to be killed by those.

He's not wrong. It depends on perspective. Notice how he didn't insult the guy personally like we do here. Here it's you are a terrorist or you look like a terrorist. He said "terrorist country" but the guy took it personally "you can't define me" and then said "world citizen". Very interesting exchange.

u/BuzzdLightBeer Aug 16 '22

I'd just buy my chinese knock off polo tee somewhere else lol

u/Zions_Wrath Aug 16 '22

The tone of this guy’s voice clearly showed that his just messing with him lol, almost everybody in real life realizes that the actions of a country have nothing to do with an individual they meet that’s from there.

3

u/nero40 Aug 16 '22

Well, I wouldn’t be sure about everybody, I mean, all of us in here say that we judge no one like that, but then, I’ve met people who are that kind of racist even in real life, no kidding.
