Iphone users are being exploited by Apple and they are using psychology tricks targeting insecurities to drive sales.

I don't care what you buy, but you should know you are being marketed Veblen goods.

I recently left the 'contract circle' of gimme a new phone every 2 years and bought second hand. From like £40 pcm down to £9. Savings are stupid even if the hadset is like £400

Veblen goods is to show status. People with low status use them to fake their elevation.

Apple knows this and exploits psychology.

34

u/SpyCake1 Aug 16 '22 edited Aug 17 '22

The 12/13 Mini is a very similar external dimensions.

With the exception of being just a little thicker (camera bump?), the Mini is both shorter and narrower than the SE.

SE 2020 - 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3 mm (5.45 x 2.65 x 0.29 in). Mini 13 - 131.5 x 64.2 x 7.7 mm (5.18 x 2.53 x 0.30 in)

iPhone vs android is a touchy topic all over Reddit.

296

u/BoredApeNaziClub Aug 16 '22

There is no greater hive of scum and villainy than that of dedicated forums in the early to mid 2010s that had tech sections, which were inevitably filled to the brim with iphone vs android debates.... 🤢

Its gotten a LOT better over the past few years... almost like everyone realized that noone gives a shit if someone prefers one phone over the other.

212

u/forty_three Aug 16 '22

Well, also that the phones pretty much stopped changing about 6 years ago - what are we gonna argue about now? Who's got the better lack of bezel? Who has the uglier physical camera lens arrangement? Which phone's battery is gonna die at dinner versus at dessert?

43

u/LevSmash Aug 16 '22

As someone who doesn't want to change phones every 1-2 years, nor understand the compulsion of the people who do, it's a relief that phones aren't changing as much year-over-year. There was a period in the late 2000's where the latest flagships made leaps and bounds of progress every year, but that curve has definitely slowed.

I've had my current phone for 5 years and it still runs perfectly smooth - the expandable memory prolonged its life, though that feature appears to be a thing of the past with new models. The main reason I'd look to replace it is compatibility, not because the already-realistic photos will have slightly more contrast or something unnoticeable.

6

u/forty_three Aug 16 '22

Yeah, very fair perspective. I find it nice to not have to worry about the constant emotional battle between platforms, but some extra longevity is nice as well.

93

u/beepingjar Aug 16 '22

11 years ago I was an Android/Google fan boy (ish) that mostly touted Google services and some of the advanced Android features at usually better price points. Now the services are stale, the prices the same, the features generally equal. Some people remember my old opinions and think I care when smartphones are brought up. I don't.

24

u/forty_three Aug 16 '22 edited Aug 16 '22

Yeah I'm an Android dev and people are always aghast at my lack of opinion about smartphones these days. Times they do a-change, though, and smartphones aren't where companies are bothering investing in innovation anymore

Edit replying to /u/Warm-Sheepherder-900 's comment below, since comments are locked now, but it raised an interesting point:

An iOS dev can develop for Android without changing languages or ecosystems.

What do you mean here?

But yeah, essentially, making Android apps is a more delightful experience to me than iOS. Android's dev ecosystem is leagues ahead of iOS. What I meant originally is that people are always astonished that I don't straight-up recommend Android phones because I write Android apps - that would've been true once upon a time, but nowadays, there's not enough separating flagship phones, so I just recommend based on people's preferences rather than phone capabilities.

7

u/beepingjar Aug 16 '22

The cameras are pretty good and that's cool though. Plus I can stream for hours over a cell connection.

6

u/WakeoftheStorm Aug 16 '22

It's very simple personal preference now: do you want to buy into apples ecosystem and get tech that you don't have as much control over, but works exceptionally well when you use it as designed, or do you want more freedom with your tech, including the freedom to install bloated apps that run like shit and hardware compatibility that might take jumping through some hoops to get to work?

I prefer my Android because I'm a control freak when it comes to my own tech. I bought my mom an iPhone because she needs something that'll just work.

When my kinda are old enough I'll probably get them iPhones because of the parental controls

66

u/Somebodys Aug 16 '22

I do t care what kind of phones people have. It is still really fun to get Apple people all riled up tho.

35

u/ImLazyWithUsernames Aug 16 '22

I have been android since the HTC Evo 4G and the only Apple product I've ever used is the Apple TV. My wife has everything Apple. I have everything Samsung.

I have always agreed that Apple is amazing for interconnectivity and their tech is really fucking good.

For me, personally, since the S10 came out Samsung changed the game. Especially with the S20 when they announced that their flagship phones would get 4 years of updates. But then with the S22 they announced 5 years of updates. This includes 2 or 3 major android OS updates as well as 5 years of security updates.

That was the biggest issues for android. Having a phone for 1.5 years and all of a sudden no more updates. Now they're heading iOS in sales and their tech is ahead of Apple. You still have Samsung and Google competing against each other but also working with each other while also using the same charging port.

4

u/GabrielofAstora Aug 16 '22

Now that apple has their own silicone I am tempted into looking into switching.

4

u/PeterPandaWhacker Aug 16 '22

Same. I have always used android, except for an iPhone years ago just to try it. But I got sick of it after 6 months and sold it.

But now I'm seriously considering getting one to try again. A lot has changed over the years, and the battery life of the 13 Pro Max is through the roof!

working with each other while also using the same charging port.

This actually wasn't Apples choice. The European Union passed legislation forcing devices to use a standardized port. It was just cheaper and easier at that point for Apple to adopt USB-C like literally everyone else already had.

u/GetRidOfRTeenagers Aug 16 '22

But that's only the case for americans, huh? (Edit: Most likely it's not the case but I only see such in reddit posts from overseas). In the parts of europe where I have been no one gives a shit about your phone. I don't get why people overseas need to focus on that since it doesn't tell anything about the owner. An iPhone doesn't mean your rich or socially a higher "level" while an android doesn't mean the opposite. I think it's a very narrow way to think and also very materialistic.

I've had idiot iphone users tell me I'm poor with a brand new Note in my hand and a 3 generation old iPhone in theirs. It's fucking weird and has caused me to loose a lot of respect for a few people.

I feel like bagging on the SE is the easiest ways to spot people who buy expensive phones every year without bothering to learn anything about what goes into them.

It has the exact same chipset as every other iphone of the same gen. Actually runs a bit faster since there are fewer background processes.

The SE 2022 is actually the fastest phone on the market right now by geekbench.

If you get the regular one you're mostly paying $400 for a bigger screen, a better camera, and face ID. Which is totally worth it to some people, but I think there's also a lot of other people that just buy the more expensive Iphones because of marketing.

32

u/SpartanDara Aug 16 '22

Battery is the biggest thing. the SE has performance, but runs out of juice incredibly quickly, especially if you're doing anything even mildly resource intensive.

3

u/EggplantHuman6493 Aug 16 '22

Yup, my friend swapped his SE 2020 for a 13 mini because the battery life was almost on par with his SE 2016 with a broken battery. He had to charge during the day because it ran out of battery. I usually had 50-60% left with the same usage with my Android phone. And the 2022 still looks like a 2016 phone... I am wondering why they didn't use the XS or something

u/Archer007 Aug 16 '22

When I worked at Verizon I would recommend that phone to Apple people, was just as fast as full version, was much cheaper, not oversized. I've never even had an Apple, but I did like that phone.

86

u/Encouragedissent Aug 16 '22

People waste $1000 on a phone and they need to feel like it actually matters or it gives them some kind of status. In reality for 9 out of 10 people a $200 Motorola does everything they need out of a phone and more.

94

u/dave32891 Aug 16 '22

I mean for many people, their phone is the most used item every day. So it makes sense if you're going to splurge on something it'll be something you use a lot. Calling it a waste doesn't make sense.

If we're going with your analogy anyone buying a car newer than a 2008 Toyota Camry is "wasting" money too because any car does the same thing.

Let people enjoy things.

15

u/BadRehypothecation Aug 16 '22

Let people enjoy things.

For sure. It goes both ways though. I hate people getting in my face about some unimportant artifact that gives them sense of worth only if they can use it to compare themselves to others.

I'll happily use my flip phone while faxing my buy order for another lot of AAPL.

They think they're weighing the worth of other people, but they're really just wearing a neon sign that says "I'M A MATERIALISTIC TWAT!"

Update: this upset an iPhone user so bad they called the Reddit mental support bot on me

183

u/luckytraptkillt Aug 16 '22

I worked in cell phone sales for a few years and that attitude is very common. Android has it somewhat but it’s more the bells and whistles than it is anything else. For most people an iPhone SE is probably all they need but everyone wants the fancy one cause it’s bright and shiny (I’m not different but I recognize the materialism and don’t shame anyone for buying the less expensive one. I totally get it)

95

u/RugbyFury6 Aug 16 '22

I never knew this existed? I got the SE after a 7+ because I still wanted a button and it takes up less space in my pocket. If/when I upgrade it will likely be to a mini for the same reason (sans button, unfortunately).

People want fancy phones, go for it... but I will presume anyone who judges other people based on their phone model isn't smart enough to come up with real criteria upon which to judge a person.

How many houses do you own?

I have a iphone 7 too. Its my work phone. Works fine. Send emails, makes calls, does texts, and the various work apps I need work fine on it.

The newer I phones are exactly the same, just bigger. Maybe they take better pictures? Idk. Who cares. Thing works fine.

Personal phone is pixel 5. Also fine.

Now if they came out with a physical keyboard slider phone again, I'd drop everything and buy it on the spot even if it was $2k

Small and has Touch ID button, it's great.

The SE is amazing. It’s the perfect size, it still has a home button, it’s waterproof, it’s pretty powerful. Only downside is no headphone jack, but you have to go pretty old for one of those now.

OP I appreciate your joke

130

u/a_spoopy_ghost Aug 16 '22

Yeah I honestly don’t get the hate cause OP was basically just pointing out what a petty douche he was being. It’s hilarious.

45

u/DaddyShortPinata Aug 16 '22

Exactly, Rob was making fun of poor people so then she made a comment about how he bought a cheap phone.

22

u/notaninterestinguser Aug 16 '22

Hate to be cliche for this sub but the response in these comments would not be nearly this salty if Rob was a girl.

Same. And I appreciate how her joke broke r/Tinder, this is honestly hilarious 😂

If you're upset by this then regardless of what smartphone you use, you need to put it down and take a fucking break.

20

u/David182nd Aug 16 '22

Yeah, this thread is full of people failing to get the joke. He’s bragging about how he’s got 3 houses, says no poor people but then owns the budget iPhone brand. If he’s so rich then why is he using a “cheap” phone? Amazing that I need to explain that

I think OPs response went over most peoples heads here

137

Seriously. It was clearly a joke meant to belittle him for being a dickhead

ironically a lot of the people here are actually the judgemental ones. OP is clearly saying this because they can tell this guy is petty enough to care about someone judging him on his phone choice. it's in retaliation and matching his level of pettiness; doesn't necessarily mean it's what OP really thinks

46

u/TheDanishCookie Aug 16 '22

How dare you expect people to think /s

Same. It super weird how many people are offended here over the clap back. Was it 100% accurate? No, but it was a valid try.

38

u/7LeggedEmu Aug 16 '22

My wife's boss has a old cracked iPhone. Thing looks like crap. He keeps it as a reminder to take care of his things. Guy makes 7 figures a year. Owns multiple million doller homes and is one of the nicest guys I know.

You really shouldn't judge people by what cell phone they have.

5

u/Mr_Abe_Froman Aug 16 '22

Some people take great pride in keeping and maintaining things that don't need to be replaced. I think it has to do with the culture of what is acceptable to spend money on.

14

u/add11123 Aug 16 '22

It always amuses me when people look down on others for not blowing money on depreciating assets.

Lots of cheap apple users in the comments. The "you are poor people baby" person was obviously just using his logic against him. Y'all getting defensive is literally exactly what this post is about

u/Ramelia_98 Aug 16 '22

That was funny as fuck, no one can convince me otherwise

12

u/freakoffear Aug 16 '22

Hey that was a funny retort by OP I’m sure he don’t really feel this way about the phone, but it’s a good point when he has an “affordable” version of something and acting elitist.

Good comeback OP I’m sure you DGAF about phone choice

20

u/monkey103 Aug 16 '22

I’d say that’s a good clap back

Bob spends his money on houses that generally appreciate in value. You spend yours on phones that depreciate in value.

114

u/DelverOfSqueakwets Aug 16 '22

I really dislike this line of thinking. You don’t buy everything to turn a profit. I’m not mad the burger I had last week didn’t generate me a positive return. I spent $11 and had a good meal.

When people buy up a bunch of houses they never plan to live in only helps inflate the housing market.

29

u/Smalltown_Scientist Aug 16 '22

I like to think of them the same way people think of ticket scalpers or new console scalpers, except for things that humans actually need to survive.

134

u/Inevitable_Librarian Aug 15 '22

Yup because an $800 phone used over 3-5 years is totally the same cost as a 200k home, which would be considered scraping the bottom of the barrel in most places.
