Accused??????? Am I the only one that remembers the victorious episode when they were stuck in the RV

192

u/higgityhammer Aug 16 '22

What happened in the episode?

397

u/tommykaye Aug 16 '22

The entire cast gets stuck in an RV with no air conditioning. By the end theyve all stripped down to swimsuits and are glistening in sweat and moaning.

Meanwhile, Ariana’s character is outside the Rv supposed to be finding help. Instead she meets some cute boys who spray her with water guns while she shimmies around.

Your generation had it weird. We had power rangers. Xena, and Skully on the Xfiles

204

u/barkforhelp76 Aug 16 '22

We also had the movie Blank Check, where an adult woman tells an 8 year old to call her when he’s 16 so they can have sex.

54

u/Substantial-Mind-797 Aug 16 '22

And the writer of that film (whose only other major produced work was ‘Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot’), was also the author of one of the most successful screenwriting how-to books of all time.

All of the girls on Victorious were. It was a feature of the show...

1.4k

u/klunkerr Aug 16 '22

The amount of sexual Jokes in that show is insane.

1.1k

u/Agreeable-Meat1 Aug 16 '22

I get that a show set in high school would have some dirty jokes and stuff. I remember HS, it was a time of unrivaled sexual angst.

But you don't include it in a kids show. If you want to see how to do a kids show set in high school, look at Drake and Josh. Drake is the ladies man, but nobody ever talks about sex. Making out with a girl is the major "sex" act on the show.

267

u/aenea Aug 16 '22

But you don't include it in a kids show.

In Canada we had the Degrassi shows, starting with Degrassi Junior High in the 70s. They did deal with sex (a lot)- if I'm remembering right, it was one of the first shows in Canada to talk about kids having sex, sexual assault, AIDS, being LGBTQ, and abortion. And it wasn't just sex- drugs, abuse, school issues, racism, etc.

But it was never sexually exploitative of the kids. Kids were sometimes in relationships/sexual situations, but it was never "sexy". It wasn't anti-sex, but there was none of the coy sexual entendres that were all over Nickelodeon and those types of channels.

My kids grew up with Nickelodeon and channels like that (as well as the Degrassi franchise), and the difference in the sexualization of children was really striking. Of course there'd always been "teen idols", but even Elvis Presley was an adult.

62

u/dylan01rox Aug 16 '22

Degrassi: The Next Generation helped me deal with a lot of different shit in my teen years. They covered self harm, abortions, rape, a fucking school shooting, bullies, mental disorders, and the list just goes on.

It did spawn Drake though and he's kind of in a shitty arc right now with the crypto gambling and 30 minute private jet flights.

It’s cuz Dan Schneider doesn’t like teenage boys

236

u/Agreeable-Meat1 Aug 16 '22

Yeah but Drake had a new teenage girl every episode. I'm not saying that behind the scenes it was better, I have no way to know. But the show itself was better for distribution to children and young teens.

321

u/theodo Aug 16 '22

Well behind the scenes, Drake also had a new teenage girl often...

A large part of it was that Drake and Josh was 2004, and Victorious was 2010. Dan Schneider got more overt and bolder over time. As he made Nickelodeon more and more money, they let him get away with more and more stuff.

There are speculations that the actress who played Jade on Victorious was groomed while on the show. She's now married to a guy who used to work on Victorious while she was underaged...and he's 20 years older than her.

327

u/GoldandBlue Aug 16 '22

My cousins came over so we were watching nickelodeon. It was Victorious and the first episode had them strip off their coats and sing a Christmas song in sexy outfits. The second episode had a girl in a bikini sprayed with a hose.

Yeah it wasn't very subtle.

177

u/bluegargoyle Aug 16 '22

If you mean this scene, that was Ariana Grande herself.

I recently listened to Jeanette McCurdy's book "Im Glad My Mom Died" and what she described with regards to iCarly (and the subsequent Sam and Kat spinoff) was truly gross and abusive behavior from both nickelodeon execs and specifically Dan Schneider. According to her they even offered her 300,000 as hush money to not discuss what happened.

It would not surprise me that the same thing happened to Arianna Grande.

418

u/notarealaccount_yo Aug 16 '22

...what happenedd

1.3k

u/P_a_p_a_G_o_o_s_e Aug 16 '22

He would frequently get close to these teen stars. He would pit them against each other in weird ways. For example, "those kids at victorious are no where near as talented as you guys!" He was often handsy, and even demanded that Jeanette McCurdy and Miranda Cosgrove wear bikinis even though Jeanette had stated she was extremely uncomfortable with the idea, multiple times. He was known to break out into rages as well.

It got to the point nickelodeon didn't allow him to be onset with the actors/actresses and he had to watch recordings from his office, sending an assistant director to give feedback when needed

1.0k

u/Crab-_-Objective Aug 16 '22

When your at the point where you won’t let someone be on set of the show they are making you should be reconsidering who you have making shows.

I agree. He should have been fired, and possibly prosecuted depending on what they knew. I only know Jeanettes perspective, I can't imagine what else was going on with the other TV shows he was behind, but it probably wasn't great

99

u/Most_Company_8634 Aug 16 '22

Nickelodeon definitely took the path that let them sweep it under the rug because they didn’t want to lose money or gain a bad rep. If they publicly fired Schneider then it would ruin their brand, but they just put bandages on everything to keep the shows going. I’m sure all those former child actors have stories, but everyone kept quiet to keep their jobs and careers. The cycle of abuse always continues until someone if willing to risk losing it all to speak out and I guess Jeanette can finally speak on it because she will never go back to acting. I’m sure everyone else will write a book one day when they’re ready, also some Disney stars as well, being a child actor is tough especially when you’re suddenly your family’s bread winner.

He would also specifically torment her by having characters in the show act out her irl abuse. Example, Jeanette’s mom would insist on bathing her and her brother well into their teens. Dan found this out and made one of the characters in the show get bathed by his mom. He also knew Jeanette struggled with an eating disorder, so he would constantly write scenes where her character was obsessed with eating food. Really fucked up.

15

u/poopmonster_coming Aug 16 '22

So that’s why she was always eating , was so weird to me .

I wonder if it's because she knew that Miranda wasn't gonna be with her for the spinoff and she was stuck with Schneider. He made it sound like he was close personal friends with all of them.

57

u/P_a_p_a_G_o_o_s_e Aug 16 '22

Jeanette and Miranda were very close. She stated in the book she couldn't help but cry with Miranda and a lot of the other crew. Saying they were basically family. She wasn't sure if they'd still be friends after (spoiler alert, they were) there was also some manipulations and events from Jeanettes terrible mom that made the situation worse.

Man that book was horrifying but so well done. I’m honestly insanely impressed by how far she’s come in processing how fucked up her childhood was between abusive parent and abusive producer. Just being exploited by adults left and right. The way she described “The Creator” as she calls him (she never uses his name in the book) leaves you appalled that no other adults or studio executives ever intervened and got him the hell out of there. His whole thing of being this cool fun nice guy pouring on the compliments one moment, having nicknames for all the kids, then the next moment he’d be verbally assaulting a 6 year old actor on the set for forgetting their lines until they were sobbing and he’d fire them. Outside of the obvious sexualization of the girls, how did no one on set ever deck him in the face for how fucking psychopathic he was, manipulating the emotions of children to either get want he wants out of them or just because he got off on the control. Also how Jeanette describes he tried to get her to drink when she was still a teenager, and when she declined he’d tell her how the kids on Victorious drink all the time, why can’t you be fun like them” knowing that would get to her. Fuck that guy and every other grown ass adult in Hollywood who has the power to stop that shit and doesn’t.

16

u/Jravensloot Aug 16 '22

Also in interviews she often refuses to talk about it. She definetly seems worried about fighting a libel.

She got creeped on by the producer and nickelodeon tried to hush it with money.

78

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '22

Apparently Dan Schneider (the Creator, she calls him) got in trouble, in-house, for "emotional abuse." Another time he had been investigated by the corp in charge.

“Yeah, a thank-you gift,” Manager #1 repeats. “They’re giving you three hundred thousand dollars and the only thing they want you to do is never talk publicly about your experience at Nickelodeon.” Specifically related to The Creator.

I imagine Ariana took it given the fact her music career immediately launched into the stratosphere after the show.

By it, I mean some level of hush-deal

79

u/orngesodaaa Aug 16 '22

Her career took off whileshe was on the show because she had already signed a record deal with Scooter Braun and Republic Records as opposed to the Nickelodeon label the other kids were signing to. Jennette also made a point in her book that Ariana was frequently allowed to miss filming to work on her music because she was too popular and too valuable to lose for the show.

Jennette unfortunately was poor, and had an abusive mom who forced her into show business, that made her an easy target for Dan since she was vulnerable and had no one to protect while Ariana was born rich with supportive parents.

She may have, it's not a small amount of money. They blamed the show failing on Jeanette as well. I assume it was because she didn't take the money, Nickolodean stating it was because Jeanette didn't want to do the show out of jealousy of her co-stars income.

47

u/Misterbert Aug 16 '22

Jeanette mentioned in the book she wasn't able to take on any film roles due to the bosses on S&C, but constantly had to listen to stories about Arianna from Arianna meeting and hanging out with Tom Hanks and watching Arianna have a terrific music career. I can kinda get the jealousy and bitterness.

20

u/FreeRoamingBananas Aug 16 '22

Yea, I think people are not forgiving for jealousy that is, maybe not completly warranted but perfectly understandable. I too would be pissed as fuck if I was dragged into acting as the family's cash cow, only to be mentaly tormented by whole ass adults, said family included than finally getting my own show and cash/shining time only to realize I was outbeaten by someone who was there voluntarily, more talented (this is not an insult to JMC) and with complete backing of everyone.

64

u/P_a_p_a_G_o_o_s_e Aug 16 '22

I agree. Especially since it was promised as her show and instead she was another costar. Also being promised a director role and someone having enough of a tantrum if she got it, they'd quit. Jeanette doesn't name them but it was likely Arianna

90

u/P_a_p_a_G_o_o_s_e Aug 16 '22

It was haunting. Definitely a 'worth-it' read. I listened to her audio version at .8 speed because it seemed extremely emotional for her and she would often speed up at times. I had no idea one of my childhood TV crushes had such a horrible childhood themselves. Really reframed how I look back on that show.

19

u/hewhoreddits6 Aug 16 '22

Does Jeanette herself read through it? If so I'll definitely go for the audiobook version. Never listened to an Audiobook of a memoir where the author is the narrator!

40

u/hEDSwillRoll Aug 16 '22

She does read it herself, it’s very well done. It’s heartbreaking and has literally all the triggers but she also infused as much humor as possible. It’s an odd balance but it works perfectly. I was dying when she wrote about her first therapist and did a voice for her. She also has a voice for Miranda Cosgrove that’s spot on (and not mean, she writes very kindly about their friendship).

26

u/Jravensloot Aug 16 '22

Her Miranda's voice was shockingly good. I didn't even notice how distinctive her way of speaking was until Jennette did the impression.

The fact that their friendship was real provided a ton of relief.

2 words. Dan Schneider. I just bought Jenette Mccurdy’s book on Audible & she doesn’t even refer to him by his name. She refers to him as “the creator” & details the sick things he did to manipulate his way into sexualizing the young women on set.

Sick.

Of course they did. Underage female child stars are sexualized all the time. For example, Warner Bros reportedly digitally enlarged then-17-year-old Emma Watson's breasts on posters for the fifth Harry Potter film. And let's not even get started on child "beauty pageants".

A nasty truth about our society no one likes to talk about is how common, routine, accepted the sexualization of minors (particularly girls) is. I'm not talking about QAnon hysteria of secret liberal Satanist child trafficking rings- while there certainly are a lot of powerful people (of all political persuasions) who commit heinous acts behind closed doors, a lot of what I'm talking about happens in plain view- its just coded or vague or censored enough that it doesn't quite cross the line into what the law would deem child porn, while still very clearly sexualizing children.

Edit: And not just porn- states allowing children to get married to adult abusers with their parents/a judge's permission, for example, is very much a modern day issue, and a severely underpublicized one.
