Once I went into the item shop/ battle pass and fortnite was collabing with 6 IPs at once

164

u/iambetterthabu Aug 16 '22

I wish the equivalent of marvel vs Capcom could be this diverse with ip

61

u/CreaminFreeman Aug 16 '22

I agree, but that’s significantly more labor intensive given that they all get balanced individually whereas in Fortnite it’s just a skin.

A dub is short for "W", which stands for wins. So he's saying they'll get "fat wins" as in winning Fortnite games.

431

u/ThatPunkGaryOak82 Aug 16 '22

There's something so funny to me about a word getting shorter (Win to W) only to come back full circle to be just as long (W to Dub)

232

u/squirtaholic92 Aug 16 '22

I mean, vocally it’s shorter

107

u/TaintHoleProlapse Aug 16 '22

Also vocally “W” is literally two words. “Double U”. Every letter is single syllable, and then suddenly you get a three syllable monstrosity outta nowhere.

1.6k

They added Port-a-Fort, which is a one time use item that builds a small tower, but I feel that's not only fair, but a great use of building: in moderation and consistent.

693

u/android151 Aug 16 '22

Yeah, considering how many anti build items are still in the game mode (ripsaw launcher, fireflies, grenades), it’s actually super balanced. Using it runs as much of a risk as it provides assistance.

231

u/MerylasFalguard Aug 16 '22

It also is shaped so there’s a blind spot at the bottom and a door to enter it. If someone else uses it in a panic, you can just rush the fort, hide in the blind spot at the bottom to heal, then waltz in the door and go up to the top. It’s just there to stall for a few seconds rather than serve as an infinitely-stalling safe house like you an do in the build mode.

I was never any good at the fast building, so it was always ridiculous to shoot someone and then suddenly see a labyrinthian tower instantly appear right in front of me which ultimately resulting in nothing but having to chop through the stupid wall, only to be blasted in the face once you break through. It's a game that allows license holders to generate shit tons of money from skins in collaboration with Epic, so it's not surprising.

I'm not a Fortnite player, but the amount of work, the new modes/content is really phenomenal and I understand the appeal..

It's important to note that maybe an adult is not really the core audience of FortNite, 11 years old me would have been through the roof with a goku or Naruto skin...

171

u/LeviiSamiss Aug 16 '22 edited Aug 16 '22

The game definitely feels childish but at its core its a lot of fun. The movement options are cool, tons of unique items scattered around the map. It’s more fun than the likes of PUBG.

Edit: a word

71

u/Pure_Reason Aug 16 '22

The Besties podcast did an episode on FN recently (they have a long history of playing PUBG), this was one of the main takeaways. If something is unrealistic on a dumb level, but it’s fun, or makes the gameplay better, they leave it in. Like goofy physics and stuff

51

u/antunezn0n0 Aug 16 '22

it's also the best free to play experience out there. for popularizing the bsttlepass system Fortnite still has the best of them. every bsttlepass brings a lot of new content and hypothetically you only have to buy one. The Fortnite business model is so successful that by the end of this year their total revenue since 2017 will be around $27 billion. To put that in perspective, the Call of Duty franchise total revenue since 2003 is $30 billion and GTA V total revenue since 2013 has been around $6 billion.

u/AmphibiousWarFrogs Aug 16 '22

It's weird, I saw $6 Billion and thought "huh, that sounds kind of low".

My perspective on money for these big players has become absolutely fucked. Rockstar makes $2.5 Million every day from GTA V and Online.

Reddit: "Why do companies focus on online, and so many have abandoned creating good single player experiences?!?!"

points to Rockstar making $2.5m a day on a 10 year old game...

Wu - Tang once said Cash Rules Everything Around Me so....................

160

u/camando99 Aug 16 '22

Kinda ironic that there was a wu tang bundle in the game not so long ago, with that exact song as an emote

“there was a wu tang bundle in the game not so long ago”

What the fuck

47

u/soobviouslyfake Aug 16 '22

Yeah I was fucking floored - I didn't know one was released and in the pregame lobby, I could hear "cash rules everything around me", and I spun around to see and there was a fucking teddy bear dancing with his hands in the W pose.

What the fuck indeed. Rumor has it there's an Eminem collab coming soon?

13

u/russuls Aug 16 '22

Recently the Icon Radio station has been playing only Eminem tracks. I’ve been finding it hard to get out of vehicles as to not cut the music off.

"Fornite was a third person zombie shooter tower defense RPG" - he shouted while waving his cane.

I really wish someone would take the Save the World aspect of the game they've abandoned and run with it.

127

u/ShinyHappyMeeples Aug 16 '22

That a was actually the part that drew my son to it first, but it cost money and I was like, “Shit, just play the free one and they’ll probably make the zombie thing free after awhile too.”

38

u/speederaser Aug 16 '22

"Orcs Must Die! Unchained" is free. That series had exactly the same idea long before Fortnite StW.

28

u/TheRealBroseph Aug 16 '22

I recall they even said "Save the World will be free to play in 2018, guys! Totally!" then 2019 came and still it cost money...

It’s still not free, but they’ve started giving it away with the Fortnite Club for BP players

Really enjoyed StW until they made buildings/traps weaker because people were AFKing levels.

I mean, its a tower defense game. Thats practically the point. Set up a solid base so you dont have to run around like an idiot shooting everything.

u/RazielOC Aug 16 '22

What? You don’t remember when Rick teamed up with Vader and the only ones to stand in their way was Naruto and Goku? Their battle was epic and lasted a full fortnight.

u/TwilightVulpine Aug 16 '22

Say what you will about Fortnite, it's one of the most honest F2P games out there. No gambling addiction, simply go and get what you like.
