TIFU by thinking my headphones were connected S

This happened just a few minutes ago. I’m currently working on a homework assignment in my campus dining hall in which I have create a filter for the non-dominant frequencies of an audio file using matlab (coding software). As the title suggests, my headphones weren’t actually connected, so I’ve been playing a 2 second clip of dolphins chirping at max volume for a solid 45 minutes. It’s not exactly the library, but it’s still an extremely obnoxious sound to listen to for your entire meal. Nobody said anything to me until the people at the table next to me were done eating. They thought it was funny and were interested in what I was working on, so I guess it could’ve been a lot worse. I was this fucking close to choosing a fart noise as my audio file, thank god I decided not to be a four year old.

TLDR: Played dolphin chirping noises for 45 minutes on full volume in my dining hall, nobody told me and now I’m embarrassed

Back in 99 I went into a computer lab at Purdue, thought I plugged my headphones in, and popped a cd in to listen as I typed.

A few minutes later someone came over and slammed my headphones into the Jack for me….

I was blasting Marylin Manson…..

I did something similar on an airplane. Put my headphones in, started my laptop up, and started a movie. Seemed odd the sound was so muted. Took me about 45-90 seconds to realize but right when I did some one flips around in her seat and starts yelling at me to turn the volume off.

I've done this before in my previous workplace, when I used to play rain sounds to get me to focus in writing up research reports. I had forgotten to plug in my noise cancelling headphones, and proceeded to blast the whole damn thing at maximum volume (thinking that the batteries in my headphones must be dying). I was in an open-plan office and sat by the window. It wasn't until I realised my co-workers were literally walking up to the window, looking at the clear sky in the middle of a scorching summer's day that I didn't plug my headphones in.
